Initially, I tried using Lorenz’s Equations.  The Lorenz equations are three differential equations, a first order equation for each of the x, y, and z components of the trajectories position:
     
These equations were originally derived to describe a chaotic convection system.  Candles are a convection system, thus the Lorenz equations seem appropriate for candle flicker.
